Beyond My Comfort Zone…And Loving It!

Stretching far out of my comfort zone today. In a different time zone, in a different country, in a different language, heading to a destination I’ve never been.

By one bit of security is a good cell signal and google maps. (How did we get along without google maps before???)

I’m in Lisbon, Portugal, the first week of a four week stay. Those of you who know me well know that I get a case of wanderlust if I’m in home base for too long.  This time I’ve chosen to stay for a month to see what it is like to ‘live like a local.’

A dozen of us are loosely sharing in the experience, organized by Adventurous Life . All solo business owners, we’ve each come here for different reasons. I’m continuing to Skype coach my existing clients and working on a few business ideas that I never seem to find mental space for at home.

Being here for longer than the typical tourist trip gives me space to pace things out and not feel compelled to cram all the experiences into a few days. I set as a goal to do one new thing a day and to walk my 10,000 steps, an easy thing to do in a city where walking on granite and basalt tiled streets is the main mode of transport.

Sharing a cozy apartment with two other ladies, reminiscent of college dorm life. Sharing stories, long walks, late nights, and ideas I probably wouldn’t have thought of on my own. Barbara loves to walk and I’ve joined her almost every morning on a walking search for a different coffee shop every day. Marcie has a knack for navigation and sets us on the right course for whatever adventure we are headed to that day.

Today I am enjoying a day alone to catch up on all the things I have put aside as I made it a priority to immerse in the local sights. My Portuguese language skills are so rudimentary, however most people in this tourist destination are so kind and far more conversant in English than I can ever see myself being in their language.

I’ve finished my caffe com leite grande as I write this and now heading to the closest bus stop to get to the Estrella Basilica and Park for my ‘new thing to see’ today. On the walk home, I’ll stop at the market for a bunch of fresh peonies to brighten the apartment.

What feelings are coming up? Such a mish mash…

Joy to be here and be part of daily life.

A bit of intimidation that I’m not conversant in the language.

Confidence that I know I will figure it out somehow.

A keen sense of situational awareness.

Openness and wonder.

I am feeling so alive!

When was the last time you stretched far from your comfort zone?

What did that bring you?
